Sicily: Biking the Southern Coastal Villages​

 

Spend time on your own in Syracuse, the ancient Greek city that once rivaled Athens as the most important in the Greek world. Today, Old Syracuse is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Archeological site, featuring the Ear of Dionysius, the Roman amphitheater, and one of the largest Greek theaters in the world. In Ortigia, walk to the Fountain of Aretusa and visit the cathedral and piazza. Take an evening stroll along Ortigia’s seaside promenade, and then dine on seafood or pizza at a local restaurant. The city’s ancient and medieval structures will both awe and fascinate you.

If you have chosen the optional Post-Trip Extension, you remain in Syracuse for an additional two nights and have all day to explore the city and the nearby sites. We suggest a day trip to Mt. Etna, Sicily’s active volcano, or Taormina, a hilltop gem overlooking the Ionian Sea.
