architectural masterpieces such as the stunning Guggenheim Museum. As the
capital of Basque Country, the city also boasts a fascinating Old Town, museums

Day 1 - Independent exploration of Bilbao
Today discover how this city has reinvented itself, with its
host of modern sites designed by world-renowned architects. The metro is a
combination of architectural craft and engineering prowess by Britain's famed
architect, Sir Norman Foster, and you will see his dramatic, curved-glass metro
entrances, which are locally known as fosteritos
, or “little Fosters.” Other
masterpieces inlcude Philippe Stark's La Alhandiga, which is an old wine warehouse,
converted into a multicultural center, and Iberdrola Tower, designed by Cesar
Pelli, the tallest tower in the Basque country. The bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava, who also designed La Paloma
(The Dove), the soaring Bilbao airport terminal, is also well worth visiting.
Continue your tour with a walk around the Avenida de
Abandoibarra, where you will find the Museo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Museum),
which houses works by El Greco, Sorolla and Gauguin, among others.
This evening, venture into the Casco Viejo (Old Town). This
ancient heart of Bilbao dates back almost 1,000 years, yet is still full of
life. Here you will find a variety of pintxo
bars in Plaza Nueva, Jardines
Sreet or Santa Maria.
Day 2 - Independent exploration of Bilbao
Continue your exploration of Bilbao, walking along the
bridges and walkways that unite the city's new and old sections. A walk across
the Zubi Zubi Bridge is highly recommended. You might also take a boat ride on
the Nervion River to get a different perspective of Bilbao. Perhaps you'll
venture up the Artxanda funicular railway to another viewpoint over the city.
If window shopping appeals to you, then stroll the Gran Via with all its modern
shops and stop at the beautiful Café Iruna next to the Albia Gardens.
Day 3 - Depart for the U.S.
