From atop the towering fortress of Montalcino, you take in a stunning Tuscan landscape unchanged for more than 600 years, with rolling hills and valleys thick with olive groves, endlessly winding vineyards, expansive golden fields, and stately cypress trees that stand like joyful exclamations … Enmeshed in cacophonous hubbub, you walk amazed among the colorful, crowded byways of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, one of the world’s great market districts, where street vendors hawk their wares, farmers display their produce, and sidewalk chefs enliven the air with wafting smoke and fragrant spices … Come walk with us.
Who walks with us?
How do you know if a VBT walking vacation is right for you? If you love exploring off the beaten path, it is. If you want an authentic and more intimate encounter with local culture and traditions, it is. If physical exercise stimulates your mind, it is. Our travelers love that we vitalize our walking vacations with wonderful activities—many of which you couldn’t arrange on your own. Yet our trips are never regimented, and always leave room for personal choice and free time. If that sounds like the perfect balance to you, come walk with us.
“The Amalfi Coast walking tour was just the right blend of nature, exercise, fresh food, fresh air, culture, and fun. There were plenty of opportunities to sightsee while covering a less-traveled path. Our guides did a superb job of describing the history, culture, and geography as we moved along.”
The tao of walking with VBT
Your walking vacation is not a race. You’re not competing with anyone. It’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in your surroundings, traveling at your own pace and with your own intention. The only goal is to savor the beauty of the natural landscape and the cultural nuances of your environment. You’ll make intriguing detours as they arise, and as you walk, your Trip Leaders will share stories, history, and local lore.
“The scenery in Patagonia is some of the best in the world. But better than that is how close you can get to the scenery. On the VBT trip, we could hike to the base camp of Fitz Roy, walk directly on the glaciers, get right in front of icebergs and glaciers, and enjoy it all on foot.”
The most affordable, comprehensive walking vacations in the world
Our prices are without question the best you will find today in the active-vacation business, and we are the only walking tour company to include roundtrip international airfare. But what makes our trips especially valuable is more than a matter of money. It’s about meticulously planned itineraries, charming accommodations, memorable cuisine, and expert trip leadership. In a word, it’s about quality.
“Probably the best parts were the cultural connections, in which VBT arranged for our tour group to have private hikes and cultural demonstrations with local community members. While Machu Picchu’s beauty is spectacular, the solitude of our private encounters trumped it for me.”
Only VBT includes roundtrip international airfare
With prices averaging $800 more than our land-only packages, our Air Package Plus includes roundtrip international airfare from up to 30 U.S. cities aboard world-class airlines like LAN, Alitalia, British Airways, United, and Delta Airlines—plus an extra night or two of hotel accommodations. We don’t spend excessive time transferring between far-flung locations. Instead, we target a specific region and stay in a few places, usually for two to four nights each. You’ll have choices of routes with varied terrains and distances each day, so you can walk as much or as little as you wish. For example, on our new Italy: Quiet Pathways of Tuscany, travelers stay for three nights each in Siena and Pienza, providing ideally located homes for daily explorations.
“This was our first VBT experience, and we were a little anxious that we might not be able to keep up. We found that we didn’t have a problem keeping up, but we were pleased nonetheless to find that there were options for alternate, less strenuous walks when the mood struck us.”
Lodgings that are destinations in themselves
At the end of every road, you’ll find a beautiful night’s rest waiting for you at VBT’s splendid accommodations. We always choose small hotels, inns, and resorts that abound with character and charm. For example, on our new Walking New Zealand, you’ll stay for 2 nights at the eco-friendly Peppers Awaroa Lodge, remotely set in the heart of Abel Tasman National Park on South Island.
“The hotels where we stayed were wonderful, and offered magnificent vistas and the most comfortable beds for our tired but fully satisfied selves.”
The best Trip Leaders
Our Trip Leaders are local to the areas they serve, so they know all the ins and outs. Each day they’ll lead your walks and man the support vehicle, making sure you’re never more than a few steps away from the comfort you crave. They speak fluent English, but most important, they understand the lay of the land—what Arenal trail has the most bird life, which Irish hedgerows skirt the prettiest farms, where the stone path gets slippery in Cuzco. They’ll delight you with stories and insights on local history, politics, and customs, and their humor and kindness set the tone for the whole group.
“The Trip Leaders on our walking tour were fantastic, aware of the needs and endurance of the participants as well as the conditions and trails.”
