Discover Scotland
Castles brooding at the feet of craggy hills, bagpipe players enrobed in tartan, whisky distilleries in every county, and a hearty plate of haggis and neeps ‘n’ tatties, or turnips and potatoes. Aside from these cultural touchstones, the spellbinding nation of Scotland is full of surprises, too. Crisp gins distilled with local juniper, a remarkably creative modern cuisine, and gorgeous, flat cycling routes along sleepy rivers. It’s the perfect destination for VBT cyclists in search of a singular adventure.
Our Scotland bike tours provide a wide and sweeping view of the nation’s epic landscapes. In the Scottish Borders, trace the contours of the green valley carved by the River Tweed, stopping to stroll the inviting lanes of villages dripping with charm. Explore the narrow medieval streets of Edinburgh, the atmospheric capital of Victorian architectural treasures and literary giants.
Our bike tours lead you to Scotland’s magnificent vistas and illuminate the dramatic past that unfolded among them. On and off the saddle, you’ll marvel at imposing castles once defended by mighty clans. Admire the sublime serenity of lochs and glens, forests and mountains. And feel the famously warm welcome of the Scots, brimming with pride and quick with a Slàinte mhath – Cheers!
Country Highlights
- Cycle the graceful green valleys of the Scottish Borders along the tranquil River Tweed.
- Ride the train past Scottish landscapes and townscapes to Edinburgh, where literary legends echo among atmospheric cobbled streets.
- Pedal past the imposing Hermitage Castle, one of Scotland’s most notorious, said to be haunted by a goblin of local lore.
- Make your own gin, distilled from locally cultivated juniper berries.
Tartan Cloth
The idea that wearing particular tartan colors and patterns identify one’s belonging in a certain Scottish clan is controversial among historians and fashionistas. Today, regardless of ancestry, Scots are likely to don any number of patterns on clothing ranging from every-day to formal. Tartan shawls, dresses, suspenders, neckties, and anything else you can imagine can be spotted on the streets of Scotland.
True Taste of Scotland
Scottish cuisine has been deliciously bolstered by the innovations of nouveau chefs and by a diverse immigrant population. Still, when in Scotland, the iconic national dish must be tried. Haggis is legendary for a reason – a savory blend of sheep’s heart, liver, and lungs enhanced with onions, spices, and oats. It is the quintessential farmer’s supper that sustained a hard-working, historically rural nation.
Scotch Whisky
For a whisky to be legally designated Scotch, it must have been made on Scotland’s soil. Lots of other parameters have been set, too, not least of which is age: it must have sat in oak barrels for at least three years, with at least 40% alcohol, though the most elite is 100 years old or older. At any given moment, upwards of 18 million barrels of the spirit are maturing in more than 140 distilleries across the country.
