Italy: Lake Como & the Italian Lake District
While many claim to know the Italian lake district, few have visited Lake Iseo. Nestled between Lake Garda and Lake Como, this pristine lagoon is Lombardy’s hidden gem—almost completely unknown to tourists. Here, you’ll explore the lake’s serene waters by boat, and its quiet shoreline by bike, before ferrying to charming Monte Isola to discover its 13th-century castle and hamlet. Our leaders will introduce you to the vineyards of Franciacorta, where you’ll meet local vintners and sample their sparkling wines. Observe glaciers through the dome-windowed cars of the legendary Bernina Express en route to Switzerland’s St. Moritz. After a glorious adventure in the opulent city of Bellagio, your knowledge (and enjoyment!) of the Italian lakes district will outshine that of mere tourists.
Tour Highlights
- Sample delicious sparkling wines at a cantina in Franciacorta, Italy’s “Champagne” region.
- Cycle the scenic lakeside bike paths around Lake Iseo, made famous when the artist Christo installed his “floating piers” here.
- Marvel at breathtaking scenery when you ride the UNESCO-listed Bernina railway, then cycle among the splendid Bernina peaks.
- Ride the easy bike paths of the Valtellina valley, blanketed in vineyard terraces among miles of dry-stone walls.
- Taste delicious Pizzoccheri pasta and local cheeses only found in Valtellina.
Positive Impact
VBT is proud to support Wine to Water with a donation on behalf of each guest on this tour. Wine to Water is an international organization providing access to clean drinking water and emergency supplies in water-challenged regions. We believe in giving back to the places that have enriched the lives of our guests. We’re committed to identifying and supporting sustainable initiatives in a variety of areas including education, world health, economic equality, safe drinking water, the environment, and the preservation of cultural traditions.
What to Expect
This tour offers easy terrain and is suitable for beginning cyclists who are comfortable with some easy uphill rides and riding on packed gravel paths. Unpaved terrain is approximately 10% of the entire cycling offered. The tour runs mostly on dedicated and well-marked bike paths as well as country roads. We recommend a hybrid bike or an E-bike for this tour. Road bikes are available, but riders should be aware that on land-package days 2, 4, and 5 there are some short stretches on unpaved paths or roads.
Our VBT support vehicle is always available for those who would like assistance with hills.

For those who consider weather, we took this trip June 10-24, 2024. Mornings were about 70 degrees and days in mid to upper 70’s. Clouds built in the day and we had a couple of heavy rain storms including hail at night. One rainy day on the whole trip and it was on the post trip or the departure day if you didn’t take the post trip. We loved the trip, this had the most varied scenery of our 8 trips, from beaches to snow covered peaks. A number of the bike trails were the type we like, ones which go places and see things you can’t see from a car. For those considering this trip, I would strongly recommend the air package. Sirmione is not an easy place to get to without a shuttle. And Bellagio, a bit more connected would still involve a ferry, train, and change of train to get to the Milan airport. The air package is a good value. We did the pre-trip in Sirmione and took a day to bus over to Peschieria and ride a big section of the Velo trail there on rentals. Very nice paved trail passing by several villages, including the home of tortellini. Coming back to Sirmione was not so easy, not all buses in Italy run reliably, we waited for two that never came but met a number of nice people at the bus stop. And as Sirmione is a walking town, it was a long walk from the gates of the town to our hotel at the very tip of the peninsular, but worth it for the ride. The town is a tourist town and in June was busy but not overwhelming. Lots of places for reasonable souvenirs and many restaurants. This hotel was our least favorite but still good. It was quiet, had nice views, but remote. The beds were extremely firm and we had no blankets, a bit strange. The stay at Lake Iseo was fantastic! We biked around most of the lake on bike trails which had been old roads. Took private ferries. Biked around the island in the lake. Sat on the lawn and drank Aperol spritz looking at the lake and island. Ferried to the island for dinner and imagined living there! Our hotel had the most wonderful views of the lake and the dining room was also right on the water. The Bernina train ride to the glacier and the bike ride through the woods to St. Moritz on wonderfully maintained hilly gravel and dirt trails was such a bonus! If you took it fast enough, it was almost like our old days of mountain biking but a lot safer. Scenery was superb, mountain lakes with floating ice packs, snow covered peaks, and, sadly, a very receding glacier. Bellagio was a fun people-watching town and crowded enough in June for us. Hotel Florence had a great location and the staff were very welcoming. There were surprisingly many reasonable and good restaurants nearby. We took our last post trip day to rent bikes and do a loop ride up the Ghissalo to the bike museum. We had a thrilling ride down the back side and toured some nearby towns on Lake Como. Our guides Elena and Giovanni were always at the ready to answer our questions and share local information. We now know about the ancient breed of donkeys! The trip ran seamlessly due to their hard work. Our lunches outdoors under arbors and canopies at wineries were exactly what I envisioned and could have been dinners. The shared first course was the perfect way to try a bit of a new dish without getting a plate of it. The breakfasts always included eggs, wonderful pastries, cheese, yogurt, cereal and super cappuccinos! The included dinners could have been far simpler meals. Although the milage was not huge, the days were full and we mostly got in between 4-5 PM from riding so I’m not sure how any miles could be added. On a couple of days, an avid road rider in our group got extra miles with guidance from the guides for an individual self-guided ride. Our only suggestion, which a number of the group agreed on, was to include wine with the provided dinners by leaving the opened bottles from the first pour on the table to be finished by the group. This trip included a single glass with dinner. I guess the bottom-line is would you take this trip again? Our answer is a resounding yes!
A True Scenery Trip!
Excellent trip. The weather was great, the routes were beautiful, the accommodations and food were top notch, and the guides were superb. This was VBT trip number 17 and, at 75, the first time I used an ebike. I'm hooked.
Wonderful return to Italy
